177. A gentleman who occupies a position of power should be firm in conduct but affable in disposition. He should not join corrupt cliques nor cause evil through excesses in behavior.

The gentleman achieves excellence through learning and thus obtains office. For intellectuals, study followed by an official post is an important route into the world. Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go from study to an official post and from book learning to practice. Gentlemen have always been bookish by nature, full of ideals and over-discriminating in their handling of people and management of affairs. In fact, at the beginning of an official career, it is only possible to protect one’s own interests through honesty and moral integrity. Otherwise, involvement with cliques and factions or taking decisions on the basis of emotion will lead to one’s downfall and the loss of self. However, at the same time one must strive to learn the art of handling people and affairs, of being skilled in defending oneself, in mastering circumstance and in coordinating the strength of all sides for one’s own use.
